Queen Elizabeth was said to be at complete peace just days before her death and had "no regrets" about her life, according to one of her last visitors at Balmoral.

The Right Reverend Dr Ian Greenshields, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, was with Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle over the summer of 2022 as her guest.

He was one of the last people to see and speak with the late Queen before she peacefully passed away on September 8.

Speaking to MailOnline last year before the first anniversary of her death, Dr Greenshields shared how the late Queen talked a lot about her faith and her father George VI in her final days and seemed to remain mentally sharp.

Although frail, he said she spoke openly about her faith, her father King George VI and her love for Scotland.

He told MailOnline: "She had remarkable recall. She had no regrets and was very much at peace. She also mentioned her father - King George VI - and the great influence his faith had on her.

"At one point in our conversations she went to the window and said 'Who would not want to be here?' She was in a very peaceful, private place. She was at peace."

He also said the conversations he had with the late Queen just days before her passing made him wonder if she was expecting that summer to be her last.

He said: "When she died, I thought of my mother and how she, too, had spoken about her faith just before she died and that normally she would never do so.

"So, I do wonder if people, even subconsciously, are getting ready for the end. It's also very common when people are dying to reflect on their parents, as the Queen did."

The second anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's death is on Sunday.

Last year, Prince William and Princess Kate visited St David's Cathedral in south Wales to mark the one-year anniversary.

During the poignant visit, the couple laid flowers in front of a picture of the late monarch before visiting communities in the region.

The family are then believed to have celebrated Her Majesty's life privately.
