The trailer for new film, the , is here and its got fans all saying the same thing. Based on Richard Osman's international bestselling novel of the same name, it stars , , and Celia Imrie as four retirees living in a residential home who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun.
Shared on Instagram, the short clip was added to the streaming giant's official account, tagging creator Richard Osman and star Pierce Brosnan, and revealed the film would premiere on 28th August.
Despite being just a taster of what's to come, the trailer was packed with hilarious quips, beautifully shot scenes and plenty of action sequences from its cast. However, some fans of the book series couldn't help but quibble at one aspect of the film.
Comments from followers quickly poured in with many lamenting the casting choice of Ron, played by Pierce Brosnan. One fan wrote: "I just can't get behind Pierce as Ron. This trailer has done nothing to make me feel better on that score. Hopefully I'm wrong."
Another person agreed, replying: "I always imagined Ray Winstone as Ron when I read the books or Brian Cox. I got most of the others right though when I was guessing the who the actors would be." Someone else moaned: "Loved the book, and apart from Celia Imrie, I wouldn't have chosen any of these actors, so I hope it's up to scratch. I would've had Jim Broadbent, Penelope Wilton, Lennie James, Tim Spall types in there..."
And a fourth user wrote: "Still not sure about Pierce Brosnan play Ron. I wonder how many fans of the books won't be able to watch it due to not having Netflix."
In addition to Pierce Brosnan as Ron, who is descirbed as "a rash, alpha-male former union leader - and yet he still fits right in," Helen Mirren plays Elizabeth, Ben Kingsley stars as Ibrahim, and Celia Imrie portrays the exuberant Joyce.
The synopsis explains: "When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands. Directed by Chris Columbus, the film is the latest to be produced through the Netflix and Amblin Entertainment partnership."
It has also been confirmed that former Doctor Who star David Tennant will play Ian Ventham, who owns Coopers Chase, the retirement village where the foursome reside. Home Alone director Columbus also confirmed that Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Geoff Bell will portray the characters DCI Chris Hudson, Bogdan and Tony Curran respectively.
The Thursday Murder Club is streaming on from August 28, 2025.
