Sir Chris Hoy's wife breaks silence on husband's terminal cancer diagnosis - 'Superhero'

The wife of Sir Chris Hoy has described him as a 'superhero' after he confirmed he was terminally ill with cancer. Back in February, the six-time gold medalist revealed he had been undergoing chemotherapy, and in , said he had been given between two and four years to live.

Despite the severity of his situation, the 48-year-old has remained positive, claiming he felt 'lucky' to be able to receive treatment that will prolong his life.

And just hours after the announcement, for the BBC at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Denmark.

His wife, Lady Sarra Hoy, . She's now taken to Instagram to praise her partner and thank the public for their showing of support.

"Completely overwhelmed by your kind, thoughtful and helpful messages," she wrote. "Many people say they don't know what to say - that's ok, you don't need to have the words - just taking the time to message has been like a soothing balm to the soul. Thank you."

The former lawyer and charity ambassador added: "I've been told that men seeking advice about prostate cancer is up seven fold and that Chris's story is likely to save countless lives. This takes my breath away.

"Life is wonderful. We are excited about the future. We have so many more adventures planned.... And I am so fortunate to get to do it all with @chrishoy1 - the most incredible person I've ever met.

"Watching him on the BBC at the weekend was like watching a masterclass in strength of character, dignity and humility. I've said it before and I'll say it again - he truly is my real life superhero."

The post has already been lnked by more than 1,500 of Sarra's followers. There have also been a string of comments, including one from Hoy's fellow Olympic gold medalist Jessica Ennis-Hill who wrote: "You are both incredible. Sending you so much love."

The couple have two children, Callum and Chloe. Hoy has admitted they have told their son and daughter about his diagnosis, but are yet to reveal details to them of Sarra's condition.

Since the Scot, who also won 11 world titles in his iconic cyclinc career, returned from his work in Denmark the family have taken a two-week half-term holiday. The cycling icon explained him and Sarra were hopeful "the dust will have settled" by the time they return.
