As the Government a number of across the UK in a bid to save money, has shared the oldest in the country.
The Ridgeway has been a part of the UK's landscape for more than 5,000 years, spanning from Norfolk to Wiltshire.
National Trails highlighted that the road has been used by many historical figures over the years as an easy way of covering the stretch long before the car was invented.
They explained: "For at least 5,000 years and maybe many more, people, including drovers, traders and invaders, have walked or ridden The Ridgeway.
"As part of a prehistoric , once stretching about 250 miles (400km) from the Dorset coast to the Wash on the Norfolk coast, it provided a route over the high ground for travellers which was less wooded and drier than routes through the springline villages below."
Whilst it is currently unknown when The Ridgeway was first constructed, it is mentioned in texts written by the Anglo-Saxons in the early 900s. However, historians believe that it is much older than that.
In its current form, the trail is 90 miles long and has a number of historical points of interest throughout, many of which date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages.
Unfortunately, motorists who want to take a trip along the UK's oldest road will need to leave their car behind, with motor vehicles banned from using it.
Nevertheless, there are a number of historic roads that drivers can take their vehicles on throughout the UK. These include the A2 and A5, which are the remnants of Watling Street.
This broad street, which runs from Richborough to Westminster, was built before the Romans invaded Britain in the year AD 43. However, the Romans straightened sections of the road and paved it, making it more suitable for larger forms of transport such as horses and carts.
The vehicle rental company Hertz also highlighted the Preston By-pass for being a historical road. Built in 1958, the road is thousands of years younger than The Ridgeway and Watling Street, but was the very first stretch of motorway in the country, measuring just eight miles in length.
