The District line of the stops at 60 stations along its route - but only takes 74 minutes from start to finish.

The train line stretches from Upminster in the east and Edgware Road in the west to Earl's Court in west London. There, it splits into multiple branches.

One branch extends to Wimbledon in southwest London, but there is also a small branch on this line offering limited service to Kensington (Olympia).

The main route heads west from Earl's Court to Turnham Green, where it divides again, leading to either Richmond or Ealing Broadway.

Represented in green on the Tube map, the District line serves 60 stations-more than any other Underground line-over a span of 40 miles.

It's the only line in the network that crosses the River Thames on a bridge, doing so on both the Wimbledon and Richmond branches.

Portions of the line share tracks with other services including the Hammersmith & City line, Circle line, and Piccadilly line.

Unlike other lines at deeper levels, the District line's tunnels lie just below the surface, and its trains are similar in size to British mainline trains.

The District line ranks as the busiest of the sub-surface lines and the fifth-busiest on the Underground overall, with over 250 million passenger journeys recorded in 2019.

The line was originally called the Metropolitan District Railway. It opened in December 1868 and spanned from South Kensington to Westminster as part of a planned underground "inner circle" connecting London's mainline terminals.

Initially, services used wooden carriages pulled by steam locomotives.

In 1905, electrification-financed by American Charles Yerkes-introduced electric trains.

The line's signalling system has been undergoing upgrades since September 2019 as part of the Four Lines Modernisation project, and its older D Stock trains were fully replaced by seven-car S Stock trains in April 2017.
