Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Central Government has given a nod to increase the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for key rabi crops. This decision was made after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The MSP for wheat has moved from Rs 2,275 to Rs 2,425, an increase of Rs 150 per quintal. The MSP for gram was raised to Rs 5,650 per quintal, an increase of Rs 210 while the MSP for mustard witnessed an increase of Rs 5,950 per quintal, a rise of Rs 300."MSP for wheat is 105 percent higher than the cost of production," he stated, noting that during the last 10 years, the MSP for six crops had climbed by up to two times. The goal of this action is to give financial assistance to farmers and supporting agricultural income, particularly, during the forthcoming rabi season."The increase in MSP for mandated Rabi crops for marketing season 2025-26 is in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement of fixing the MSP at a level of at least 1.5 times of the All-India weighted average cost of production. This increased MSP of rabi crops will ensure remunerative prices to the farmers and incentivise crop diversification," a PIB statement said. The Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) suggests MSP for 22 crops before the annual sowing period. Seven Rabi crops and fourteen Kharif crops are covered under MSP.
