Weather Radar CoverMumbai has become India's first mega-metropolitan city to be covered by a short-range polarimetric radar network. Four new X-band radars have been installed and are currently undergoing testing. The radar network was officially inaugurated on September 14 by M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, alongside Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department, and other officials. This development follows the cabinet's approval of Mission Mausam, which aims to strengthen India's observational network with the installation of up to 100 radars over the next two years. With the addition of these new radars, Mumbai now has a total of six weather radars monitoring the region, making it the most extensively covered city in India for weather surveillance. Two of the existing radars, owned and maintained by the IMD, include an S-band radar in Colaba and a C-band radar in Veravali. Additionally, the city has hundreds of rain gauges that measure real-time rainfall at regular intervals.
