Japan Issues Tsunami Warning In Izu And Ogasawara After 5.9 Earthquake In Pacific Ocean

A Tsunami warning was issued for the Japanese islands of Izu and Ogasawara after an earthquake of 5.9 magnitude hit the Pacific Ocean Tuesday, off the coast of Japan. The earthquake, which hit the island of Torishima, around 600 kilometers from Tokyo, did not lead to any major damages, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The JMA added that though no major tremor was observed due to the earthquake, a small tsunami of around 50 cm hit Hachijo island in the Izu cluster of islands within 40 minutes of the earthquake. Japan, an earthquake-prone island that sits on four tectonic plates, has witnessed several small earthquakes in the last two months. Notable ones include a 4.8 magnitude quake in Taiwan on September 23, a 4.9 magnitude in Ehime on September 22, and a 4.6 magnitude in Chiba on September 21. Earlier, following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake off Miyazaki Prefecture on August 8, Japan issued a "megaquake" warning, with a tsunami advisory and minor damage but no serious injuries reported.
