Multiple fatalities were reported in the Spanish Lakes community after a devastating tornado tore through Fort Pierce, Florida, on Wednesday, ahead of Hurricane Milton's landfall. St. Lucie County officials told WPBF 25 News that the fatalities are in the Spanish Lakes Country Club within the community. Videos and photos revealed widespread destruction, with numerous homes destroyed and trees uprooted. Spanish Lakes is home to a 55+ retirement community.

The tornado caused extensive damage to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, destroying the 10,000-square-foot facility in seconds. Sheriff Keith Pearson confirmed that all deputies were safe."This threat is real," Pearson said on Facebook Live, "right here at the sheriff's office, 4700 W Midway Road. About ten minutes ago, a tornado came ripping through here. This is a devastating tornado. It took out that 10,000 square foot red iron building with all of our patrol cars underneath it."Shortly after Pearson's update, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported a tornado spotted over Vero Beach Highlands, moving north at 30 mph."A confirmed large and extreme dangerous tornado was located over Vero Beach, moving north at 30 miles per hour," the NWS announced. Tornado damage was also reported in Martin County, located about 35 miles from Fort Pierce. Sheriff William Snyder imposed a countywide curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to protect residents and prevent looting in the aftermath.“This curfew is in place to protect our citizens and local businesses and prevent potential criminals from outside the area from taking advantage of our citizens during this vulnerable time, as well as to protect citizens from driving on roadways obstructed with debris and downed power lines. We urge everyone to remain indoors for their safety,” The sheriff's office said in a statement.“If you have a legitimate reason to be out during curfew hours, please be prepared to inform deputies of your circumstances. Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to protect our community."
