R Ashwin Creates History: Surpasses West Indies Icon in Wicket-Takers List, Wife Proudly Applauds

Indian off-spinner R Ashwin continued his remarkable form in the ongoing Test match against Bangladesh, surpassing the legendary West Indian fast bowler Courtney Walsh in the all-time list of leading wicket-takers.Ashwin achieved this milestone on the fourth day of the match, when he claimed the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan. The dismissal took Ashwin's tally to 520 Test wickets, placing him among the elite group of bowlers with 500 or more wickets in Test cricket.His historic achievement was met with applause from the stands, particularly from his wife, Prithi Narayanan, who witnessed the moment. Ashwin became the first player in Test cricket history to score a hundred & take a fifer in a test match twice at a venue ( 106 & 5/43 vs England, 2021), (113 & 5/81* vs Bangladesh, 2024).Ashwin also became the oldest Indian to take a five-wicket haul in Tests. Ashwin also overtook Pat Cummins to go second in the list of all-time highest wicket-takers in the history of the WTC. With his 37th fifer, he also equalled the late great Shane Warne.

Meanwhile, set an improbable target of 515, Bangladesh were bowled out for 234 in their second innings, with first-inning centurion Ashwin (6/88) doing the bulk of the damage at the his home ground at the Chepauk. Ravindra Jadeja picked up 3/58.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored for Bangladesh with an 82 off 127 balls. The visitors were 158/4 when bad light had stopped play on day three.India declared their second innings at 287/4, riding on twin hundreds from Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119) for an overall lead of 514.
