Who hasn’t repurposed their mother’s or grandmother’s stunning silk sarees to create new outfits? It seems Indian designers have started bringing this trend into the mainstream. On Saturday night, actor Sara Ali Khan wore a gorgeous lehenga crafted from vintage brocade saris at the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations organised by the Ambani family at Antilia, Mumbai. The outfit, designed by Mayyur Girotra, was made using saris he had collected over the years. The multicoloured lehenga was paired with a tissue silk dupatta featuring intricate zardozi zari embroidery. On his Instagram page, the designer stated that the outfit showcased "the rich heritage of Indian textiles and [his] passion for reviving old-world fabrics."

Sustainable Fashion with Upcycling, and RepurposingThe fashion industry globally is trying to become more environmentally conscious. "While the fashion sector is booming, increasing attention has been brought to the impressive range of negative environmental impacts that the industry is responsible for. The fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for 2-8% of global carbon emissions," states the Geneva Environment Network.According to UNECE, 85 percent of textiles are sent to landfills, which amounts to 21 billion tons a year. One way to be more environmentally conscious in the fashion industry is by upcycling clothes. Upcycling helps minimise textile waste and reduces the need for new materials in the production of new outfits.Another appeal of upcycled or repurposed outfits is the ability to wear vintage textiles and alter them according to our creative aesthetics and personal expression.
