JABALPUR: The Jabalpur police have arrested three youths for allegedly threatening to behead Jagadguru Raghav Devacharya of the Digambar Akhara via social media. The threats followed a protest against derogatory remarks made online about a local deity.

All three accused-identified as Aaqib Anwar (20), a resident of Gohalpur; Mohammad Faijan (21), from Naya Mohalla, Omti; and Salman (19), of Mujawar Mohalla, Garha-have been booked under serious charges and remanded to judicial custody. Police have invoked sections 299 (culpable homicide), 296 (disturbing religious worship), and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the case. They were presented before a magistrate and sent to jail under court orders.

The controversy began when offensive comments targeting Budhi Khermaai Mata were posted on social media. Local saints and devotees, led by Jagadguru Raghav Devacharya, organised a protest to denounce the disrespect shown toward the religious figure and demand action against the offenders.

Following this protest, threatening messages-specifically calling for Swami Raghav Devacharya to be beheaded-were posted on his Instagram account. The threats were perceived as an attempt to intimidate and silence voices speaking up for religious dignity.

Swami Raghav Devacharya lodged a formal complaint at the Madan Mahal Police Station, urging authorities to take strict legal action. He also publicly appealed to Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav to ensure the safety of religious leaders and maintain communal harmony in the state.

The police registered an FIR against unidentified individuals and launching an investigation. Using cyber-surveillance techniques and digital forensics, authorities were able to trace the origins of the threatening messages to the three accused. They were arrested in a coordinated operation and have since been sent to jail.

According to police station in-charge Sangeeta Singh, the accused were apprehended after thorough scrutiny of social media activity and phone records. She confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals possibly involved in issuing or promoting the threats.

She further added that additional security has been provided to Swami Raghav Devacharya as a precautionary measure.
