GORAKHPUR: CM Yogi Adityanath on Friday underscored the importance of compassion in medical practice and said a doctor's empathy alone can ease half of a patient's suffering.

He said this while laying the foundation stone of a 500-bed Vishram Sadan (rest house) to be built at a cost of about Rs 45 crore at AIIMS, Gorakhpur.

"A doctor can cure half the serious illness of a patient with his compassion. The biggest identity of a doctor is compassion and if a doctor does not possess empathy, then it should be thought whether he deserves to be called a doctor or not. A medical institution becomes a centre of sensitivity through its doctors," the CM said.

He termed the rest house as a major step towards improving patient care . “Two to four attendants come to hospitals with every patient and how inhuman it is when someone is forced to go out in extreme cold, torrential rain, lightning and blazing sun. Therefore, it is important that we first think about such people in a humane way who are connected here with the pain of their patients, but they have to bear an additional pain," he said.

The facility, to be constructed under Power Grid Corporation’s CSR initiative, will be the largest rest house in eastern UP and is expected to becompleted by March 2027. Drawing on experience at BRD Medical College during encephalitis outbreaks, he praised the subsidized meal model for attendants. The CM also cautioned against rising trend of unnecessary patient referrals, urging doctors to cultivate the habit of taking calculated risks to provide critical care locally.

Highlighting AIIMS Gorakhpur ’s journey, he recalled its foundation laying in 2016 by PM Narendra Modi and said it has grown into a life-saving banyan tree for the region. He also proposed AIIMS Gorakhpur to integrate tele-consultation services with nearby district hospitals and medical colleges, like the SGPGI model, to enhance regional healthcare access.

AIIMS governing council chairperson Deshdeepak Verma termed the institution’s rapid progress a ‘silent revolution’ while local MP Ravi Kishan credited CM Yogi’s relentless efforts for its establishment. AIIMS executive director Dr Vibha Dutta hailed the Vishram Sadan as a compassionate facility for caregivers.
