Almost two months after the hit Netflix show Drive to Survive returned with Season 7 and ruffled quite a few feathers for its fictionalised portrayal of events, the streaming platform is now set to release a much safer yet intriguing docuseries in May. Titled The Seat, the 45-minute film covers the search to fill the seat left vacant by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. It will tell the story of Kimi Antonelli securing the coveted spot — all while still being just 18 years old.

Here’s The Seat trailerThe official trailer for The Seat was released on Monday and focuses entirely on Lewis Hamilton’s blockbuster move to Ferrari, which left Mercedes boss Toto Wolff facing the daunting task of finding a suitable replacement for the 40-year-old legend. Surprisingly, Wolff chose not a seasoned veteran, but a rookie, Kimi Antonelli.

The trailer shows glimpses of Hamilton’s headline-making departure from Mercedes and the equally unexpected decision to hand the seat to a teenager. It also captures Antonelli’s unfiltered reaction during a video call with Mercedes officials, highlighting just how overwhelming — and emotional — the moment was for the young driver as he stepped into the world of Formula 1 with one of its most iconic teams.

The Seat is directed by Kyle Thrash. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said as per The Hollywood Reporter, “Selecting Kimi as our race driver for 2025 was, as The Seat documents, a big decision. WhatsApp played an instrumental role in this. It was the engine that kept everything moving smoothly and privately, allowing our team to focus on Kimi’s development, discuss progress, and ultimately communicate our choice. We’re excited to give F1 fans around the world a unique insight into the process, showing how we arrived at this pivotal moment in the team’s history.”

The documentary description for The Seat on YouTube reads: The Seat showcases the once-in-a-generation decision to promote Kimi Antonelli to a Formula 1 driver, making him the third-youngest rookie in the sport’s history. Witness the private WhatsApp calls and chats that led to the shocking shift within the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team.

The Seat will start streaming on Netflix a day after the conclusion of the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, on May 5.

Five races into the season, Antonelli has already proven that picking him was the right call. He currently sits one spot ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who is seventh in the F1 Driver Standings. In his rain-affected F1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix, Antonelli showcased his talent by finishing fourth. He followed that with sixth-place finishes in both China and Japan. Although he could manage only an 11th-place finish in Bahrain, he bounced back strongly with another sixth-place result at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
