The Winnipeg Jets are skating on thin ice as they return home for a must-win Game 5 at Canada Life Centre . Trailing 3-1 in their best-of-seven Western Conference Second Round series against the Dallas Stars , the Jets are now in a fight to keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive. Thursday night’s clash (9:30 p.m. ET; CBC, TVAS, SN, TNT, truTV, MAX) could mark the end of their playoff run—or the beginning of a remarkable comeback. For Winnipeg, the mission is simple: survive and force a Game 6 back in Dallas.
Winnipeg Jets’ home ice advantage could be key in game 5 elimination battle
After back-to-back losses to the Dallas Stars, the pressure is mounting. But head coach Scott Arniel is turning to the hard-earned lessons from the postseason as a source of strength heading into this elimination game.
“Now our backs are against the wall and we've got to win our next game,” Arniel said Wednesday. “That's all part of this time of the year. … There's a lot of different scenarios. Now we have to step up and be at our best and learn from the lessons that we've had recently."
Despite being the Presidents' Trophy winners with a league-best 116 points (56-22-4), the Jets have struggled on the road, going 0-5 in the postseason. Fortunately, their home record tells a different story—5-1, including a commanding 4-0 win in Game 2 of this series.
Arniel drew comparisons to the team's dramatic first-round victory over the St. Louis Blues, where Winnipeg rallied from a late deficit to win in double-overtime in Game 7.
“We went through it in St. Louis, losing the games down there, Game 4 down there, and coming home big at [Game 5],” he recalled. “Losing Game 6, coming home here for Game 7. These are all just lessons.”
With home ice on their side and experience under pressure, the Jets are hoping to tilt the matchups in their favor and extend their postseason run.
"Maybe this is a little different, because it is elimination games from this point forward," Arniel added. "We got to take care of business here if we want this extended series."
With their season hanging in the balance, the Jets are counting on their grit and strong home record to keep their Stanley Cup aspirations intact. The stakes couldn’t be higher—and the team knows there’s no room for error. Game 5 is more than a game; it’s a test of character, resolve, and belief.
