Send Push
Apple is reportedly working on a new generation of the iPhone SE. According to a report by 9to5Mac, the iPhone SE 4 may be the first phone to arrive with Apple’s first-ever in-house 5G modem . If the rumours are to be true, this will mark the end of Cupertino-based tech giant’s dependency on Qualcomm for 5G modems. This move comes after years of development following Apple's acquisition of Intel's modem division in 2019.

The report cited sources to claim that the iPhone SE 4, is expected to launch in spring 2025. Apple launched the iPhone SE 3 in 2022 at a starting price of Rs 43,900. However, industry analysts have predicted that the new model may come at a higher price.

Apple’s in-house 5G modem: What to expect

Codenamed " Centauri ," Apple's modem is designed to handle not only 5G cellular connectivity but also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The report suggests that this integrated approach will lead to improved performance and significant battery life savings, particularly in Low Power Mode.

While Apple's primary motivation is likely to reduce reliance on external suppliers and gain greater control over its hardware, the move could also bring substantial benefits to users. Improved integration between hardware and software is expected to result in a smoother and more efficient user experience.

Despite past setbacks and reported failures with prototype modems, Apple is reportedly confident in its latest design. While Apple ultimately aims to incorporate its in-house 5G modem across its entire product lineup, the company has reportedly chosen the iPhone SE 4 as the testing ground for this new modem.

Apple iPhone SE 4: Expected specs

The iPhone SE 3 looks like an iPhone 8, however, the new model may have a more modern look, which is similar to an iPhone 14, the report notes. The iPhone SE 4 may include flat sides and an OLED panel with a notch at the top. The report cited sources to reveal that the iPhone SE 4, codenamed V59, will have the same 1170 x 2532 display resolution as the 6.1-inch iPhone 14.

Apple is also likely to bring Face ID to the iPhone SE 4, putting an end to the Home Button with Touch ID on the iPhone SE models. However, the Dynamic Island will remain exclusive to the more premium models.

Previous reports suggest that Apple wants to make the new SE compatible with Apple Intelligence features. The report suggests that this may become possible as the iPhone SE 4 may feature the A18 chip with 8GB of RAM. Apple is also expected to use the same variant of its latest SoC used in the base iPhone 16, with a 5-core GPU.

When it comes to the camera, the iPhone SE 4 may have the same 48MP wide camera and 12MP front camera as the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. However, the report claims that the rumoured SE model won’t have ultra-wide or telephoto lenses. Apple will likely take advantage of the 48MP sensor to make the upcoming SE capable of taking photos with 2x “optical” zoom.
