'Dreaming of Khalsa Raj not a crime': Amritpal Singh contradicts mother's statement

NEW DELHI: Amritpal Singh , who recently took oath as a Lok Sabha member, has expressed his disagreement with his mother's recent statement in which she claimed that her son was not a supporter of Khalistan.

The radical Sikh preacher in his statement issued through his team on Saturday night, said, "Today, when I came to know about the statement made by Mataji yesterday, my heart was very sad. Support should not come from him. "

Further, he emphasised that aspiring for ' Khalsa Raj ' is not a criminal act but rather a source of pride. He stated, "Dreaming of a Khalsa state is not a crime, it is a matter of pride. We cannot even dream of backing down from the path for which millions of Sikhs have sacrificed their lives."

He also reiterated his commitment to the ' Panth ' (Sikh community) over his family, saying, "I have said many times from stages that if ever I had to choose between 'Panth' and family then I will always choose the 'Panth'."

In his statement, Singh referred to a historical incident involving Banda Singh Bahadur, where a young Sikh's mother attempted to save him by denying his Sikh identity. Singh warned his family against compromising on the idea of Sikh Raj and cautioned them to be mindful while interacting with the 'Sangat' (congregation).

His mother, Balwinder Kaur, had earlier stated that her son was not a Khalistani supporter and had fought the elections within the constitutional framework. She demanded his immediate release so that he could work on the issues he had campaigned for. However, she later claimed that the media had misrepresented her statement.

MP from Punjab Singh, along with Kashmiri leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid, was granted parole to take oath as a member of the Lok Sabha. They were sworn in as MPs on Friday in the chamber of the Lok Sabha speaker after completing the necessary formalities. Singh, who is currently imprisoned in Assam's Dibrugarh district under the National Security Act, was flown to Delhi on a four-day custody parole for the oath-taking ceremony.

Singh, who modelled himself after the slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, won the Khadoor Sahib seat as an independent candidate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, defeating the Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira by a margin of 1,97,120 votes. He was arrested in Moga's Rode village on February 23 last year after he and his supporters clashed with police personnel while attempting to free one of his aides from custody.
