'In constant contact with Indians in Israel during challenging times': MEA

The ministry of external affairs ( MEA ) on Saturday said that India’s embassy in Israel remains in close contact with the approximately 20,000 to 30,000 Indian-origin residents in Israel.

“We are in constant touch with Indian nationals through our embassy in Israel,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed in a recent briefing. “Necessary travel advisories and other instructions have been issued to ensure their safety during these challenging times.”

The announcement follows heightened military actions across West Asia. The conflict in Gaza and Israel’s northern borders with Hezbollah-backed Lebanon has seen intensified confrontations. Iran , a key regional player, recently vowed retaliation for what it described as provocations by Israel and the United States. In response, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for drone strikes targeting Eilat, an Israeli resort city. Israel intercepted three drones over the Red Sea on the same day.

The MEA, issued a statement last week expressing alarm at the “evolving escalation in West Asia and its implications for regional stability.” The ministry urged all involved parties to “exercise restraint and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy,” stressing that continued hostilities ultimately harm civilian populations, including those taken hostage.

"We are deeply concerned by the evolving escalation in West Asia and its ramifications for peace and stability in the region and beyond. We reiterate our call to all concerned to exercise restraint and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy," the statement said.

"The ongoing hostilities are to nobody’s benefit, even as innocent hostages and civilian populations continue to suffer. Our Missions in the region are in contact with the Indian community," it added.

On October 26, Israel conducted targeted airstrikes on Iranian military installations, an escalation after Iran launched 200 missiles toward Israel earlier this month. The broader conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands, including a significant rise in casualties within Gaza, as the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) pursue operations against Hamas , the militant group that launched an offensive on Israel in October 2023.
