The ministry of science & technology on Saturday announced a significant partnership between the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences ( ARIES ) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to enhance India’s Space Situational Awareness (SSA) capabilities.
This collaboration aims to develop advanced image processing techniques , data analytics software, and new instruments to track space objects, particularly near-Earth objects and artificial satellites, ensuring the safety of satellites and their users.
ARIES, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Navaratna Defence PSU BEL.
This agreement marks a major step forward in advancing India's technological capabilities in space, in line with the Government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make-in-India’ initiatives. SSA is essential for predicting and avoiding potential collisions between objects in space.
As part of the MoU, ARIES and BEL will utilize observations from ARIES’s advanced telescopes, including the 4m International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT). The two organizations will collaborate to create sophisticated image processing techniques and software solutions for data analytics. They will also work together on developing necessary instruments and laboratories. To build capacity in SSA, various training workshops will be conducted, with ARIES sharing its expertise in space weather.
The MoU was officially signed at BEL’s Ghaziabad Unit by Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, Director of ARIES, and Ms. Rashmi Kathuria, General Manager of BEL, in the presence of senior officials from both organizations.
