NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday marked World Environment Day by planting a Sindoor sapling at his official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, New Delhi.
The sapling was presented to PM Modi by a group of women in Kutch who had shown bravery during the 1971 India–Pakistan war. A video shared by news agency ANI shows PM Modi ploughing the soil, planting the sapling, and then watering it.
The symbolic act comes weeks after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in April, where Hindu men were killed in front of their wives. Sindoor, traditionally associated with married Hindu women, became a national symbol after the April attack, triggering strong retaliation from India.
India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror bases inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Sources have said the name of the operation was suggested by PM Modi himself.
In his first public statement since the operation, PM Modi declared, “Not blood, but sindoor flows through my veins," warning that India’s enemies now know what happens when "sindoor turns into gunpowder."
