Rollout of 'Ladki Bahin' scheme just before Maharashtra polls 'jumla': Supriya Sule

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra leader Supriya Sule on Thursday questioned the timing of the 'Ladki Bahin' scheme being announced just before state assembly elections.

Calling it a 'gimmick', the NCP(SP) leader said, "As the Maharashtra elections are hardly 2 to 3 months away, a shower of 'jumlas' was expected from the state government."

"The scheme is good in the wake of growing unemployment and inflation. The state government tried to give support to women but the scheme has many conditions and riders," she added.

The scheme aims to provide Rs 1,500 to eligible women.

She said that elections are currently being won through loans and expenditure of government funds. Regardless of who holds power, there is a pressing need for introspection on the considerable costs associated with this approach, she added.

An MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) leader Prakash Mahajan made headlines on Wednesday when he said that the scheme's benefits should not be given to those who have "two wives".

"A community where people have two wives, two or more children, especially people from the Muslim community, should not be given the benefit of this scheme," he said.
