6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes off New Zealand coast

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck off New Zealand's western coastline. Officials confirmed no tsunami alerts were issued.

According to the US Geological Survey , the seismic event occurred just after 1 am local time. The epicentre was located 187 miles (300 kilometres) southwest of Invercargill, New Zealand, at a depth of six miles (10 kilometres) beneath the ocean surface.

New Zealand authorities classified the earthquake as moderate in intensity. No structural damage was initially reported following the event.
