Making a political comeback, Donald Trump won the 2024 US presidential election, defeating Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Trump secured 312 electoral votes, while Harris finished with 226, making Trump the first US president since Grover Cleveland to return to office after a gap.

Trump’s win was powered by key victories in battleground states such as Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. His campaign focused heavily on economic issues, immigration, and crime, themes that resonated with large sections of the electorate, particularly in suburban and rural areas.

He also made notable gains among Latino and Black voters compared to previous Republican performances.

Kamala Harris, who had served as vice president under Joe Biden, ran on a platform of protecting democracy, healthcare access, and abortion rights, but struggled to overcome economic concerns and voter fatigue with the Democratic administration.

The Republican Party also regained control of the Senate and held onto the House of Representatives, giving them a full legislative majority.

This GOP trifecta marks a significant shift in US politics and is expected to shape future policy directions on immigration, taxes, and foreign affairs.

Voter turnout was strong, crossing 63 per cent, reflecting the deep national interest in the high-stakes election.
