US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over a rare earth minerals deal, saying that renegotiating the rare earth agreement could lead to serious consequences.
"Zelensky, by the way, I see he's trying to back out of the rare earth deal — and if he does that, he's got some problems," Trump said during an interview.
"We made a deal on rare earth and now he is saying, well, you know, I want to renegotiate the deal. He wants to be a member of Nato, He was never going to be a member of Nato, he understands that, so, if he's looking to renegotiate the deal, he's got big problems."
The rare earth minerals agreement was expected to be formalised when Zelenskyy visited the White House, but tensions between the leaders led to a fraught meeting that played out in front of television cameras.
The Republican president had recently lashed out on both, Putin and Zelenskyy, expressing frustration with the two nations as he struggled to form a truce to end the war. Though he claimed to make ‘a lot of progress,’ the agreement was becoming increasingly complicated as there was ‘tremendous hatred’ between the two men.
‘Pissed off’ with Putin
Meanwhile, Trump was also “angry, pissed off” with the Russian leader as he questioned Zelenskyy’s credibility, suggesting that Ukraine needed external governance.
Trump warned of new sanctions on Russia, the country which is already weighted under high penalties.
Russia rejected the US proposal for an immediate and full 30-day halt in fighting.
Zelenskyy’s ongoing diplomacy
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared an update on social media platform X, saying, "We need to engage more with America, find ways to force Russia into peace, and work on security guarantees, which must become our next step after the ceasefire."
He also spoke with Finnish President Alexander Stubb about strengthening ties with the US and working towards a lasting peace.
“I thanked him for all the support Finland is providing, and we discussed ways to strengthen joint efforts with our partners to establish a lasting peace and ensure security.”
The Ukrainian leader also called out for global support, “Right now, Russia continues looking for excuses to drag this war out even further. Putin is playing the same game he has since 2014. This is dangerous for everyone — and there should be an appropriate response from the United States, Europe, and all our global partners who seek peace."
War continues into the third year
In a recent attack, Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv, was struck by Russian drones, overnight. A military hospital, shopping centre, and residential areas were hit, leaving at least two people dead and dozens wounded.
Ukrainian officials have warned that Russian forces are preparing for a new military offensive in the coming weeks to increase pressure on Kyiv and strengthen their position in ceasefire negotiations.
Over the past week, Zelenskyy said, "most regions of Ukraine" had come under attack, with more than 1,300 Russian guided aerial bombs, 1,000 attack drones, and multiple missiles launched.
Moscow, however, claimed its air defence systems shot down six Ukrainian drones and that Russian forces had captured a village in the occupied Donetsk region. Kyiv has not commented on the claim, and independent verification is not yet possible.
