US President Donald Trump said on Friday that his trip to Alaska was not about brokering a Ukraine peace deal, but about getting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.
“I’m not here to negotiate for Ukraine,” he told the reporter before departing for Alaska.
He said that he was open to offering security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a peace deal, but stopped short of making any commitment, stressing that Europe would need to take the lead on the issue.
Raising the expectations from the meeting, Trump commented "high stakes" before boarding the plane.
Moreover, speaking of the meeting, the US president said that Putin was interested in "Trump economy" further warning of "severe consequences", Reuters reported.
Meanwhile, Ukraine President Zelenskyy has expressed hope from the meeting saying that the war-torn nations was expecting "America’s support".
"The stakes are indeed high. The main thing is that this meeting opens the possibility of a real path to honest peace and substantive dialogue among leaders in a trilateral format: Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian side. It is time to end the war, and the relevant steps must be taken by Russia. We hope for America’s support. As always, we are ready to work as productively as possible," he said in a post on X.
The US president has, however, put the chances of the summit failing at around 25 per cent, while suggesting that a successful outcome could pave the way for inviting Zelenskyy to a three-way meeting with Putin.
"The second meeting is going to be very, very important, because that's going to be a meeting where they make a deal," Trump told Fox News Radio on Thursday.
"This meeting sets up the second meeting, but there is a 25 percent chance that this meeting will not be a successful meeting," he added.
Scheduled to start at 11.30am local time (1930 GMT) and followed by a joint press conference, the meeting marks the first summit between the two leaders since Putin met Joe Biden in June 2021.
