Who is Timothy Haugh? The NSA chief fired amid cyber security concerns

Send Push
The Trump administration has removed general Timothy D Haugh from his post as director of the national security agency ( NSA ) and commander of US cyber command , a report by Washington Post revealed. The abrupt decision sparked concern in Washington and left many unanswered questions. After Haugh, William Hartmann has been named the new acting director of the NSA.

Who is Timothy Haugh ?

A native of Hughesville, Pennsylvania, Haugh earned his commission in 1991 as a distinguished ROTC graduate from Lehigh University. In his career that spans over 3 decades, Haugh has led at every level of the Air Force, including as commander of the Sixteenth Air Force and cyber national mission force, and served as deputy commander of joint task force Ares and US cyber command.

His academic credentials include a bachelor of arts in Russian studies and multiple master of science degrees from the Industrial College of the armed forces, Naval postgraduate school, and Southern Methodist university.

General Haugh was a decorated military officer and has held dual leadership roles at the NSA and US cyber command, two of the most critical pillars of the nation’s defence and intelligence operations.

Timothy, along with his wife Sherie Haugh have been married for 31 years and are parents to one son and a daughter.

Wendy Noble, who was also removed alongside Haugh, was reassigned to a position with the Pentagon’s office of the undersecretary of defense for intelligence. No explanation has been given for the sudden removals. Officials told the Post that they were unaware of what prompted the leadership shake-up. Neither the White House nor the Pentagon responded to requests for comment.

The news has prompted an outcry from senior Democrats. Senator Mark Warner, chairman of the senate intelligence committee, said in a statement, “general Haugh has served our country in uniform, with honor and distinction, for more than 30 years. At a time when the United States is facing unprecedented cyber threats , ... how does firing him make Americans any safer?”

Congressman Jim Himes, ranking member of the house intelligence committee, also condemned the move.

The NSA and cyber command, both operating under the department of defense, play a crucial role in safeguarding US digital infrastructure and countering foreign cyber threats. The dismissal comes as a part of the administration’s efforts to downsize and streamline federal agencies, with Elon Musk reportedly visiting NSA headquarters last month as part of those talks.
