Mangaluru: Gold seizure controversy – Probe handed over to ACP Dhanya Nayak

Mangaluru: Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dhanya Nayak has been assigned the responsibility of investigating allegations of excess gold recovery in a theft case under Ullal Police Station limits, according to City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Commissioner Agrawal said that the mother of an accused had personally approached him with allegations against Inspector Balakrishna, who was then serving at Ullal Station. After a preliminary inquiry, the case has now been handed over to ACP Dhanya Nayak for detailed investigation. If the allegations are found to be true, necessary action will be taken.

What is the case about?

A theft complaint was filed on June 28, 2024, regarding missing gold ornaments from a house in Ullal. Inspector Balakrishna had arrested a PUC student, two other juveniles, and three friends, recovering the stolen jewellery.

On March 13, 2025, the mother of one of the accused approached the Police Commissioner with allegations of corruption and fraud by the inspector.

What is the allegation?

The complainant claims that Inspector Balakrishna called her to the station, demanded money, and took 50 grams of gold from her son’s possession while presenting him in court. He allegedly assured her the gold would be documented in the charge sheet and recovered later. However, she says there is no mention of the 50 grams of gold in the submitted charge sheet.
