Shivamogga: As part of the Wildlife Week celebrations, the Shivamogga zoo has initiated a drive to create awareness about the importance of conservation.
A tableau of the zoo, highlighting the majestic evergreen Agumbe forests, home to the endangered lion-tailed Macaques, an endemic species to the Western Ghats, is travelling across the district.
On Saturday, the fourth day, the drive was conducted at the Jog Falls, while on Sunday, the zoo staff will continue the drive near Tunga River in Shivamogga.
Speaking to STOI, VM Amarakshara, the director of the zoo, said the conservation centre has transformed itself into a modern zoo with immersive enclosures for local, regional, national, and exotic wild animals. "Besides, we are promoting nature education. We decided to create a tableau that depicts nature conservation and the urgent need to protect flora and fauna. We are focusing on the ill-effects of feeding lion-tailed Macaques on the roadside along the Agumbe Ghat Road," the director said.
The IFS officer said in the coming days, the zoo will receive zebras, baboons, rheas, gharials, porcupines, and dholes from other zoos in India.
