Courteney Cox rules out Friends reunion as sit-com approaches huge anniversary

Courteney Cox has expressed her doubts about the possibility of a 'Friends' reboot ever taking place.

The 60-year-old star, who played Monica Geller in the beloved sitcom that aired from 1994 to 2004, recently shared with PEOPLE that she finds it "hard" to imagine the show being remade.

The original cast also featured Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller, and Matthew Perry, who sadly passed away, as Chandler Bing. Show creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane have been bombarded with pitches for a reboot centred around the characters' children, but Courteney remains sceptical: "It's hard to try to redo anything."

She feels that anything associated with a 're-' prefix wouldn't do justice to the original group's magic: "Anything with 're' in front of it with this group... I think it's so special." As 'Friends' approaches its 30th anniversary, the actress is astounded by how quickly time has flown, telling PEOPLE: "It's just insane to me because it feels like time, it goes so fast and I don't realise it."

Gone are the days when she would wish time away: "We used to say, 'Oh, I can't wait for this month' or 'God, it feels like forever.' I would never say that line anymore."

Cox, also known for her role in 'Scream', cherishes the enduring legacy of 'Friends', proud that the humour and characters resonate across generations: "That show is incredible. Every joke holds up, all the characters are just so amazing, and we [had] the best writers in the world. I'm lucky that it continues on through all the generations. And that's very fortunate."

David and Marta have responded to the clamour for a revival. David reflected on the show's legacy, saying: "I would imagine it's kind of what it must feel like when your kid turns 30 and you're like, 'How did that happen?'" Marta shared insights into fan requests, noting: "We get that a lot. I get emails about it all the time. Everybody has a great idea, and the great idea is: their kids, grown up, doing a 'Friends' show."

Recalling a conversation with The Times about celebrating Matthew - who tragically passed away in October 2023 from the "acute effects" of ketamine at the age of 54 - during the iconic sitcom's 30th anniversary, Marta suggested: "Two things come to mind [about how to celebrate him]: one of them is to donate to drug treatment centres - let's fight the disease."

She also proposed a heartfelt tribute: "And the second way is to watch 'Friends' and remember him not as a man who died like that but as a man who was hilariously funny and brought joy to everybody."
