Violence Erupts in Tripura After Temple Idol is Damaged; 12 Houses and Vehicles Set Ablaze

Agartala: In the Ranirbazar area of West Tripura, a violent incident erupted after an idol of Goddess Kali was discovered damaged in a temple. Unidentified individuals set fire to at least 12 houses and several vehicles, including motorcycles and pickup vans, late on Sunday night. The fires caused significant damage but fortunately no casualties were reported.

Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) Ananta Das stated that the damage occurred after the idol was found broken at the Kaiturbari temple. Eyewitnesses reported that residents fled their homes in fear as the mob became increasingly violent. To restore order, a substantial number of security forces have been deployed in the area. Director General of Police (Intelligence) Anurag Dhankhar and West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar visited the scene to assess the situation. The police are waiting to complete their damage assessment before taking formal action and registering a case.

Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma voiced his concerns over the incident, urging everyone to maintain peace and lawfulness. He criticized the situation as a disturbing sign of potential communal clashes, especially given the state’s ongoing natural disaster crisis. Debbarma called for unity and adherence to the rule of law, emphasizing that miscreants should be dealt with firmly regardless of their religious affiliations. Since August 19, Tripura has faced severe flooding, resulting in the death of at least 26 people and leaving 117,000 homeless.
