Firm faces closure for polluting river

Kochi: State pollution control board (SPCB) on Wednesday issued closure notice to Cee Jee Lubricants on charges of releasing pollutants into Periyar river.

The company is located in industrial development area at Edayar, Muppathadam, and operates as a used/waste oil recycling unit and the notice was issued by senior environmental engineer, environment surveillance centre, Eloor.

The notice said SPCB inspection team on Wednesday found presence of a dark oily effluent being discharged through the stormwater drain from the unit.

It said unauthorized discharge of effluents through stormwater drain into river is a serious offence under Water Pollution Act. “You have discharged untreated raw effluent intentionally to the waterbody,” the notice said.tnn
